Liverpool starlet told what he needs to do to break into first team next season

As Liverpool continue to celebrate winning a sixth European Cup, one member of Jurgen Klopp's first team squad will be disappointed with his 2018/19 campaign.

Ben Woodburn became Liverpool 's youngest ever goalscorer when breaking into the Reds' senior set-up in 2016/17.

A maiden Wales call-up quickly followed, before he marked his international debut by scoring the winner against Austria in September 2017.

Limited to just two Liverpool appearances since then, he joined Sheffield United on loan last summer.

The Blades finished the season by winning promotion to the Premier League, but injuries had seen Woodburn's impact severely limited with the forward returning to Anfield midway through the season as his temporary spell was cut short.

Sporadic appearances for the Reds' Under-23s side followed while he was named on the bench for Liverpool's famous 4-0 Champions League semi-final victory over Barcelona.

However, he missed out on a place in Klopp 's 23-man squad for the final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Tipped for another loan move next season, Wales manager Ryan Giggs has backed Woodburn to bounce back stronger.

And with the forward now to link up with his national side as they prepare to take on Croatia and Hungary, the former Manchester United star has urged Woodburn to put thoughts about his future out of his mind and to cement his place in the national side starting XI.

"I had a chat with the players last week about how important these two games are," Giggs was quoted as saying by Wales Online .

"We need 100 per cent focus on these games and there is a good period after the matches to sort things out.

"Sometimes you can’t stop it, but all I can do is put in the players’ minds how important these games are. They all know that.

"They’re professional lads, are focused on these games, and that’s what I need them to be. Hopefully that’s the case."

He continued: "Last camp I was delighted for him (Woodburn). He's had a tough time bursting on the scene and loan spell didn't quite go to plan, which can happen.

"You can go on and on with players who have gone out on loan and that first loan spell doesn't quite happen for them, for whatever reason.

"But Ben is one for next year I'm looking to push for that starting place, he can play anywhere across that front three, play number 10 and he's a goalscorer.

"In training he scores goals that no other play can score, the power in his shots, and now he needs to take that into games."
