Liverpool starlet Paul Glatzel undergoes surgery after suffering serious knee injury during debut

Liverpool starlet Paul Glatzel has undergone surgery after suffering a serious knee injury at Tranmere Rovers.

The 18-year-old limped off 12 minutes from the end of the 6-0 friendly win at Prenton Park in what was his first appearance for the club.

The Reds were waiting on the results of scans which revealed the young striker has sustained damage to a knee ligament.

Glatzel underwent surgery which the club have said was successful and he will now commence his rehabilitation at Melwood at the request of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Neil Critchley, manager of Liverpool U23s, said: “Paul will receive all the support he needs from ourselves as an Academy and from the medical staff at Melwood during what will be a tough period of rehab.

“Luckily we know Paul has the strength of character to overcome this setback and we look forward to seeing his talents back out on the pitch.”

The teenager scored 28 goals last season while captaining the under-18s and converted the winning penalty in the shoot-out success against Manchester City to win the FA Youth Cup in April.

Glatzel also made his breakthrough into the U23s by scoring in wins at West Ham United and Bournemouth in February.
