Xherdan Shaqiri has shared his pride after being chosen to captain Switzerland in the absence of the suspended Granit Xhaka against Spain on Friday night.
The Liverpool playmaker is a star man for the Swiss national side and has scored twice and claimed one assist at the European Championships so far to help them reach their first international quarter-final since the 1954 World Cup, which they hosted.
And with the 29-year-old set to captain the national side for the first time in a competitive fixture, he is keen to help Switzerland extend their stay in the tournament.
"I am so proud that I can lead the team in such an important match, but I will prepare as normal, as I do before every match," Shaqiri told reporters. "I won’t change anything.
"I never change even if I’m wearing the captain’s armband because I am happy and always the same with the captain’s armband and without.
"I’m very proud to lead the team tomorrow in such an important match and I will also try to show my skills and qualities on the pitch tomorrow to help the team."
