Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk wins Premier League Player of the Season award

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been named the Premier League's Player of the Season.

The Reds centre-back has enjoyed a superb campaign this term, providing the bedrock behind the joint-best defensive record in the top flight with 20 clean sheets from 37 games.

Van Dijk saw his imperious displays rewarded with the PFA Players' Player of the Year gong last month, but missed on the football writers' version of the award to Manchester City star Raheem Sterling.

However the Netherlands captain has now fended off the competition to become the first defender since City's Vincent Kompany seven years ago to win the prestigious award.

Virgil van Dijk's Liverpool pledge will serve as a Premier League title warning for Man City

Van Dijk edged out Liverpool team-mates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as well as City trio Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Sterling and Chelsea winger Eden Hazard.

The winner of the award was decided by a combination of supporter votes, a panel of football experts and the captains of all 20 teams in the top flight, including Reds skipper Jordan Henderson.

Incredibly, Liverpool had been in a position to finish their Premier League season with more clean sheets than goals conceded prior to last week's 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Liverpool will earn money than Man City this Premier League season - regardless of title outcome

However, a shutout against Wolves on Sunday will seem end their campaign with an incredible 21 with Van Dijk proving to be invaluable to such impressive defensive numbers.

Liverpool will win the Premier League on Sunday if they beat Wolves and Manchester City fail to beat Brighton at the AMEX.

Should Klopp's Reds seal the title, it will be their first in 29 years and the 19th in the club's history.
