Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk released from Netherlands camp 'due to personal circumstances'

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad "due to personal circumstances" the Dutch FA have confirmed.

The Reds star captained Oranje to a goalless draw in Northern Ireland on Saturday night as they secured their place in next summer's European championships.

Van Dijk was expected to play a part in Tuesday's game with Estonia but has now been released from his international commitments ahead of the return of Premier League football next week.

"National team coach Ronald Koeman cannot rely on Virgil van Dijk on Tuesday against Estonia." an official statement read.

"The captain of the Dutch national team has to let go of the game due to personal circumstances and has since left the Oranje training camp."

After the draw at Windsor Park on Saturday night, Van Dijk took to social media to post of his team's celebrations as they marked their passage to next summer's tournament.

However, he won't be playing a part when Oranje host the Estonians at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam next week.

Van Dijk has been an ever-present for Liverpool so far in the Premier League this term, helping the leaders open up an eight-point gap on Leicester City in second with 11 wins from 12 so far.

Jurgen Klopp's side return to action next Saturday when they travel to Crystal Palace as they get set for a gruelling run that could see them play 12 times before New Year's Day.

After the Palace game, the Reds host Napoli in the Champions League on November 27 as they aim to secure qualification from Group E into the last 16.

Van Dijk's at Anfield has seen him become one of the favourites for the Ballon d'Or trophy.

The most expensive player in Liverpool's history is expected to contest the award in Paris on December 2 with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are both aiming to lift the most prestigious individual honour in football for a sixth time.
