Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has successful surgery on injury

Virgil van Dijk has undergone successful surgery in London but Liverpool are yet to place a definitive time scale on the defender's return.

The Reds star suffered an ACL injury after Jordan Pickford's reckless challenge in the early stages of the 2-2 draw with Everton earlier this month.

After undergoing a scan immediately after his withdrawal, Van Dijk was sent to a specialist the day after when it was confirmed that surgery would be needed.

The Netherlands captain went under the knife in the capital and is now focusing on his recovery, Liverpool say.

The club have not given a time frame for how long the £75million man will be absent.

But Liverpool are facing up to the prospect of being without the 2019 Ballon d'Or runners up for much of the Premier League campaign.

Anfield sources are hopeful that Van Dijk's mentality coupled with his almost perfect injury record prior to the knee setback will count in his favour as he begins his lengthy rehabilitation process.

However, they feel it would be inappropriate to offer a speculative period for how long Van Dijk will be unavailable to Jurgen Klopp this term.

Liverpool currently have just one senior centre-back in the form of Joe Gomez with both Joel Matip and Fabinho currently sidelined.

The Reds return to action when they host West Ham on Saturday evening.

The Anfield clash kicks off at 5.30pm tomorrow night.
