Liverpool star told he should have been sent off after 10 minutes against Leicester City

Kevin Phillips believes Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton was lucky not to have been sent off in the opening 10 minutes of the Reds penalty shootout win over Leicester on Wednesday night.

Morton was shown a yellow card for the over enthusiastic challenge on Ricardo Pereira.

Leicester quickly surged into a two-goal lead through Jamie Vardy before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back.

James Maddison restored Leicester’s two-goal lead as Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino took it to a shootout where Caoimhin Kelleher was the hero.

Former England striker Phillips thinks the Leicester manager has a right to be annoyed with referee Andrew Madley.

“There was a contentious decision in the game. If I’m Brendan Rodgers I’d be a little bit aggrieved about the challenge from Tyler Morton. He possibly should have been sent off,” said Phillips.

“When we first saw it we thought it was a naughty one, but watching it back, it’s a straight red card.

“I don’t care what anyone says. You could say it evens itself out over the course of the season obviously with the challenge from Harry Kane on Robertson last week.

“That was a naughty challenge and he should have seen red there. It’s a blow for them. It was a fantastic chance to get to the semi finals.”
