Liverpool star Thiago branded not 'quick enough' by former Republic of Ireland boss

Thiago Alcantara often wins plaudits for his silky distribution but one pundit has picked a hole in what he sees as a shortcoming for the Liverpool midfielder.

Former Republic of Ireland national team coach Brian Kerr has called out the 30-year-old's lack of pace as an issue.

When talking about Liverpool's strongest midfield options, Kerr acknowledged the superior passing prowess of Thiago, who is one of the most decorated players in European football.

But the pundit raised concerns about the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich star's ability to recover defensively.

Speaking on Irish football show, Off the Ball , Kerr said: "Thiago is probably their best passer from the middle of the field.

“But he lacks the mobility required to get back into good defensive positions when the ball is turned over and the opposition are on the counter attack. He just can't run quick enough.”

Thiago was a second-half substitute for Liverpool against Burnley on Sunday as Jurgen Klopp opted to start with a midfield three of Fabinho, captain Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita.

But the Spanish international helped to secure a 1-0 win at Turf Moor that keeps the Reds in pursuit of league leaders Manchester City.

Thiago has made 17 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring twice.

He won four La Liga titles, the Copa del Ray and the Champions League with Barcelona, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He also earned winners medals in the Champions League and Club World Cup with Bayern Munich, not to mention seven Bundesliga titles.
