Liverpool star Mohamed Salah overtakes Luis Suarez and has Lionel Messi in his sights

Jurgen Klopp was pleased he didn’t have to explain it while Liverpool supporters were just happy to savour the moment.

And of all the goals Mohamed Salah has scored for the Reds, there can have been few more outrageous in its unexpected execution.

Never mind that Salah had missed several far, far more presentable opportunities earlier in the game.

His finish from the most acute of angles - and with his right foot, too - settled the contest at Red Bull Salzburg, coming exactly 100 seconds after Naby Keita opened the scoring in Liverpool’s 2-0 win on Tuesday night.

The strike was his 20th Champions League goal for Liverpool, only the second player to reach such a landmark after Steven Gerrard, who ended his Reds career with 30.

Those came over a 13-year period. Salah has netted his in less than two-and-a-half seasons.

And with eight assists, his tally of 27 goal involvements in the Champions League proper since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2017 has been surpassed by only one player in the competition over the same period - Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi with 28.

Salah is already ahead of another Camp Nou favourite, his tally of 82 goals for Liverpool matching that of Luis Suarez’s total with the Reds.

Salah, though, managed it in 125 games, while Suarez did it in 133.
