Liverpool star Curtis Jones nets first England Under-21 goal in win over Andorra

Aidy Boothroyd is convinced he will take a strong U21 side to the Euro finals in March – even if Gareth Southgate promotes his stars.

Liverpool's Curtis Jones kicked off another win for the Three Lions' kids, to extend their nine-year unbeaten run in Euro qualifiers.

The talented Anfield striker opened the scoring against Andorra, slotting home at the back post after Callum Hudson-Odoi clipped over a lovely cross.

Boothroyd has challenged his kids to earn their place on the plane to Hungary and Slovenia in their final group C games, and Kop star Jones, and Callum Hudson-Odoi were among the winners.

England sealed qualification with a win against Turkey last month and Boothroyd wanted to bed down a tactical approach against resilient Andorra, plus Albania next week.

Andorra caused embarrassment by claiming a 3-3 draw on their home artificial pitch in October, and despite having just 13 per cent possession they levelled before half time in their first visit to England's box.

Skipper Christian Garcia converted a penalty after Chelsea's on loan West Brom defender Conor Gallacher brought down Eric Izuierdo.

Ben Wilmot restored England's lead with a header from Dwight McNeil's corner, and the impressive Hudson-Odoi crashed home a 65th-minute penalty won by Rhian Brewster.

Boothroyd's final squad selection could again be compromised by senior call ups.

Boothroyd said: “Let's get as many players in the U21s as we can! I am all for that. The aim of my job is to get players through to the senior team. We have so many, and the level is that good, and deep, that we can have a strong junior team and senior team.”

England U21 player ratings

Ramsdale 6, Lamptey 7, Panzo 7, Williams 7, Wilmot 7, Gallagher 6, Dasilva 6, McNeil 7 (Buchanan 82), Hudson-Odoi 7 (Musiala 73), Jones 7 (Eze 73), Brewster 7 (Nketiah 73)
