Liverpool star Andy Robertson repeats Lionel Messi hope amid Man City transfer speculation

Andy Robertson has reiterated his hope that Lionel Messi stays at Barcelona and doesn't join Manchester City.

The Liverpool left-back opened up on the two occasions he faced the Argentinian superstar in the Champions League and called them "the hardest games" he's ever played in.

There has been heavy speculation linking Messi with a move to City after the forward handed in a transfer request at the Camp Nou, which could signify the end of a 17-year career with the Catalan giants.

Robertson spoke out about not wanting to see the attacker in the English top flight late last month and has again repeated his view.

"I hope it doesn’t happen (Messi joining Manchester City) of course," Robertson told reporters ahead of Scotland's clash with Israel in the Nations League.

"From a completely selfish point of view, I hope it doesn’t happen and hopefully he stays at Barca.

"‘But he’s one of if not the greatest player to ever play the game so for him to go to one of your nearest rivals is never a good sign.

"He’s a fantastic player and I’ve got no doubt that he would bring the exact same quality if he came to the Premier League, same passion and everything he brings at Barca.

"Liverpool have ruled out that we’re going to sign him so I don’t want him anywhere near the Premier League and hopefully it stays that way.

"Obviously you can see the uncertainty at Barca and hopefully they get it resolved.

"If he comes to the Premier League we’ll deal with it, it’ll be great for the lads to play against him because I’ve played against him twice and it’s the hardest games I’ve ever played.

"You need to stay on watch against him at all times and he can pop up out of nowhere.

"He’s a fantastic player and probably the best to ever play our game but hopefully he stays in Spain for me."
