Liverpool star Andrew Robertson makes title admission after Huddersfield thrashing

Andrew Robertson claims Liverpool will be “gutted” if their best-ever league campaign is not enough to win their first title in 29 years.

Liverpool thrashed Huddersfield 5-0 on Friday night and have hit 91 points for the first time in their illustrious history to return to the top of the table above Manchester City.

Yet City will still be champions if both sides win their remaining games and Robertson says that would be hard to take.

“Usually this number of points could win the league, but it’s not even close,” said the Liverpool defender.

“It’s going to take 97 or 98 points to win the league and whoever falls short will be gutted. But our points total is still something to be proud of.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp claims he is not thinking about City slipping up and is focused on Liverpool winning their last two league games.

“Ninety-one points is crazy, but it’s only possible because we have played the way we played,” he said.

“We have to do our job in our last two games and then if something happens in City’s games, we’re there.

“But we still have to give our best. We cannot ask for destiny, we have to work for it.

“Let’s go for it and then we’ll see. It’s still history and we want to create our own history.”

Naby Keita scored Liverpool’s fastest-ever Premier League goal after 15 seconds before Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah netted doubles to break the 20-goal barrier in the competition.

Roberto Firmino was absent with a small muscle tear and Klopp hopes he will be fit to face Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“He has a small muscle tear,” he said. “He might be ready for Wednesday, but we don’t know.”

Liverpool were also boosted by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return after a year out with a serious knee injury and Klopp said: “He’s an outstanding guy. We’re all so happy for him.”

Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert backed Jon Gorenc Stankovic after he gave the ball away for Keita’s opener.

“I have to protect Stanko,” he said. “He’s an outstanding character. It was not easy for him after that, but he fought back in the game and that makes me proud.”
