Liverpool confirm another contract as Rhys Williams makes loan move

Rhys Williams has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool - and will spend the rest of the season on loan at Championship side Swansea City.

Williams has put pen to paper on a five-year deal before making the move to South Wales to link up with Russell Martin's side.

The 20-year-old Williams made his first-team breakthrough last season as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp grappled with an injury crisis.

The centre-back made 19 appearances, including starting the final five Premier League games to help the Reds secure Champions League qualification.

Liverpool believe the development of Williams, who hasn't featured for the first team so far this campaign, will benefit from a season in the Championship.

The youngster, part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 2019, spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Kidderminster Harriers in the National League North.

Klopp has a host of centre-back options with the return to fitness of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez along with £36million summer signing Ibrahima Konate.

And Nat Phillips, who like Williams was elevated to first-team duty last season as a result of the extensive absentee list, signed a new four-year deal with the Reds earlier on Tuesday.
