Liverpool squad 'held crisis talks' with Jurgen Klopp's assistant after Burnley defeat

A number of Liverpool's senior players reportedly sought out Jurgen Klopp's assistant Pep Lijnders for crisis talks following the 1-0 defeat to Burnley in January.

The shock result was the Reds' first loss at Anfield in the Premier League since 2017.

And since then things have only got worse, with Klopp's side losing their next five home games in a row.

The loss to the Clarets came just days after Klopp's mother Elisabeth passed away.

And according to The Athletic a delegation of players spoke to Lijnders rather than Klopp to discuss what had happened against Burnley.

They also wanted to know how they could help Klopp during his difficult period, and a meeting with the whole team was held ahead of their next match, which was an FA Cup fourth round tie against Manchester United.

Despite Liverpool's recent woes, The Athletic also claim the dressing room is fully behind Klopp, and they believe the German has no plans to quit, and is determined to turn things around.

However, there are worries that confidence levels are at an all-time low, and the atmosphere behind the scenes is thought to have been tense on occasions over the past few weeks.

The Reds currently sit in eighth position in the table, and are seven points off the top four.

It is estimated failure to qualify for next season's Champions League would cost the club an eye-watering £50m.

The positive news is that their £30m-per-season Nike kit deal does not contain a penalty clause if Liverpool spend a season out of the Champions League.

But that will change should Liverpool fail to qualify for a second consecutive season with Nike asking for a small percentage drop in the base income.

The Reds do also not have the financial cushion that rivals Manchester City and Manchester United enjoy.

Those two are expected to again invest in the summer, but Liverpool may not be able to so in the same way.
