Liverpool sporting director set for Real Madrid role after turning down Newcastle United

Real Madrid have made an approach to Michael Edwards to take on the role of sporting director at the Bernabeu.

That's according to Miguel Delaney, who tweeted that the Spanish giants are hopeful they can convince Edwards to join them once he finishes his role at Liverpool at the end of this season.

"Real Madrid have approached Michael Edwards about becoming Sporting Director, and feel they can persuade him. Unlike approach from Newcastle, he hasn't rejected out of hand," wrote the journalist.

It is said that Newcastle 's new owners had Edwards high on their list of targets for the role of sporting director at St James' Park, as they recognise the need for a coherent and longterm strategy in terms of recruitment and across football operations. However, Delaney claims that Edwards dismissed any approach to work at Newcastle.

At Liverpool, he has become accustomed to working for a team which is highly successful and is one of the favourites for every competition they enter. Edwards' data driven recruitment helped pave the way for the Reds to win the Champions League as well as securing their first Premier League title in 30 years when they won it in 19/20.

During his tenure at Liverpool, Edwards has overseen the signings of all of Liverpool's forward line of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota. He also brought Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Alisson Becker to the club, putting together the core of their success.

Real Madrid seem to see the former Newcastle target as the perfect man to help them move forwards with stars such as Luka Modric and Karim Benzema now well into their thirties.

Newcastle's own search for a sporting director will continue.
