Michael Edwards 'could leave Liverpool in January' to join new club

Liverpool's sporting director Michael Edwards is 'wanted' by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, according to reports in Germany.

SportBILD are reporting that Edwards is a 'hot candidate' for the role that has been vacant since Markus Krosche departed the club for Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of last season.

Edwards is in the final year of his contract at Liverpool and has spent a decade at Anfield, where he has established himself as one of the best in the business through his smart decisions for the club.

He's overseen the signings of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Thiago - while he's also secured significant fees for a number of fringe players over the years.

After reports emerged in the summer that he was set to leave Merseyside, there has been plenty of speculation over his next destination, with Real Madrid named as an option.

However, the most recent rumours from Germany suggest he could be bound for the Bundesliga - potentially as early as January.

Leipzig's search for a new sporting director is close to completion, according to CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. And the two men would be familiar with each other after the Naby Keita transfer in 2018.

"Finding the right person for the role is still a much more important factor," he told their club website last week.

"We’ve taken the time to do this in recent months and we will not allow ourselves to be hurried – quality is taking priority over time here.

"I can confirm however that we are currently in productive discussions and have the feeling that we’ve identified the right candidates for our club and our philosophy.

"We are confident that we will be welcoming the new sporting director here very soon."

While there is no direct suggestion from that interview that Edwards is the candidate he's referring to, speculation is growing as his contract impasse rumbles on.

Edwards made a recent appearance with several Liverpool colleagues at the 2021 StatsBomb conference.

Sources indicated to the ECHO back in summer that the club wanted to retain his services but it remains to be seen how things play out.
