Liverpool 'sonic boom': Mystery as 'massive explosion' heard over city

A mystery 'explosion' noise reported as a 'sonic boom' has been heard in Liverpool.

Residents in Bootle, Anfield and Orrell Park reported waking up to a big 'bang' noise this morning.

A jet was reportedly seen flying over the area around the same time the bang was heard, according to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24.

Merseyside Police say they are not aware of any call-outs relating to the reports yet.

Lis Lambertsen from Orrell Park was one of many who heard the "load bang" at around 9.10am.

She told the Liverpool Echo: "I heard it all the way out here in Orrell Park - I actually thought my neighbour had slammed her door or something - windows rattled a bit.

"Very weird that I could hear it out here."

People also took to Twitter to find out if anyone else had heard what they had.

@Jophes86 tweeted: "Did anyone hear that massive explosion then in Bootle?"

@CraftingSpoonie said: "Any idea what that loud noise (?explosion?) was around Clubmoor and Anfield (I think) apparently ground shook and everything - approximately 9:10am today."

One Twitter user wrote: "Did anyone hear that massive explosion then in Bootle", and another said: "Anyone hear that f*****g loud bang then or am I losing the plot?"

Another pointed out the 'explosion' was likely a sonic boom.

They tweeted: "Just been a fighter jet gone over Liverpool.

"Probably a sonic boom."

Twitter user @EFCLynne said: Not sure where it’s happened. Sounded near the docks."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We are not aware of any ongoing incidents related to this."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have said they also are not attending any ongoing incidents related to the sonic boom.

A sonic boom occurs when an object - usually a jet - travels faster than the speed of sound and breaks the sound barrier.
