Liverpool have signed the 39-year-old former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger to provide cover for Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet next season.
Manninger has been training at Melwood for the past few weeks and accompanied Jürgen Klopp’s squad on their pre-season tour of the United States, which currently involves training at Stanford University before a friendly against Chelsea next Thursday.
The veteran keeper, who was released by Augsburg after a four-year spell last season, has been given a 12-month contract and is considered by Klopp as experienced backup. The Liverpool manager has allowed goalkeepers Danny Ward, Adam Bogdan and Ryan Fulton to join Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield respectively on loan for next season.
With no recall option in the loan deals, Manninger provides an insurance option for Klopp who has been impressed by the former Austria international’s influence on the squad.
