Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has backed calls for his former club to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Jurgen Klopp is a long-time admirer of the Germany international and Liverpool have been strongly linked with the player for over a year.
However, with a front-three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah already at Klopp’s disposal some have questioned whether Liverpool really need to activate the £52million buyout clause required to obtain Werner’s services.
But Thompson, who made 477 appearances for Liverpool between 1972 and 1983 – winning seven league titles and two European Cups – believes that Werner would add competition to the front free, by pointing out he’s ‘a little bit better’ than current back-up Divock Origi.
“I think he’ll give a realistic challenge to the front three. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino – they look as though they’re set, ” Thompson told Sky Sports News.

“We do have Divock Origi but I think everybody realises that he’s more of an impact player, for sort of the last 15, 20 minutes – but that’s not really good enough.
“We do need somebody a little bit better. Some people will say, “Will Werner get in and will he want to come to Liverpool?”
“I think he would and I think he does.”
