Liverpool shopping centre to get financial help after coronavirus impact

Liverpool Council is set to approve financial help for Liverpool Central shopping centre.

The shopping centre, which sits above the station and was bought by the council in 2018, is among the vast majority of retail premises that have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

It comes as shops across the country reopen this week in the latest of the government's steps to restart the economy.

The council's cabinet will approve the financial relief, which the ECHO understands will come in the form of changes to rents for businesses there, at a meeting on Friday.

The report detailing the extent of the support has not been released publicly due to commercial sensitivity but a summary on the council's website reads: "It is recommended that approval be granted for the arrangements for interim financial relief and ongoing monitoring as detailed in the report submitted."

Shops across Liverpool started to reopen yesterday, with huge queues forming from early in the day outside major brands including Primark and Zara.

Most shops have been closed since severe restrictions were put in place on which retail spaces could open in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Bars and restaurants remain closed across the country, with reopening not expected until July.
