Liverpool shoppers make up for lost time on first weekend without lockdown restrictions

Shoppers in Liverpool made up for lost time on the first weekend after lockdown restrictions were lifted on non-essential shopping.

Liverpool city centre's bars, restaurants and pubs across Concert Square, Bold Street, Castle Street and Liverpool ONE were also busy today.

Once more, there were huge queues outside Primark, Zara and even TK Maxx as customers were able to venture into 'non-essential' retail stores since the government implemented Step 2 of the roadmap out of lockdown.

People formed orderly queues outside Primark's Church Street store and like we've seen in previous lockdowns it wrapped around the length of the building down Church Alley.

Elsewhere, Liverpool ONE's Zara store was in demand once more with queues stretching past the steps leading up to Chavasse Park.

Reassuringly everyone appeared to be sticking to social distancing and numbers of shoppers were seen wearing masks outside shops as well as inside.

The city was less busy than the first day the restrictions were lifted on Monday, but there were still lots of people enjoying a highly anticipated day of retail therapy in the sunshine.

It was also the day of the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and tributes were paid to him on billboards throughout the city centre.

Along with 'non-essential' shops like clothing and homeware stores, betting shops and electronic stores - pubs and restaurants were also allowed to open this week for outdoor hospitality.

Personal care businesses like hair and beauty salons, libraries, theme parks and zoos also reopened this week, along with indoor leisure facilities like gyms for individually or within household groups.
