Liverpool shop owner giving away free drinks to people who help clean up litter

A Liverpool shop is offering free food and drink for every bag of litter that is dropped off there.

Alan Gordon from The Bread Shop Bakery in Aigburth posted on Facebook asking people to bring a bag of rubbish to his shop in exchange for a hot drink, a slush or ice cream.

The family-run business, which was founded in 1958 by Alan's grandfather, has remained open through lockdown providing essential goods including bread, pies, milk and eggs to their customers.

Alan said that he wanted to raise awareness about the increasing amounts of litter in the area, in an effort to keep the streets and Liverpool 's parks clean.

He told the ECHO: "Our parks are a mess at the moment because they are overflowing with people who want to exercise during the lockdown, there is an extra influx of rubbish.

"I take my kids, Ava and Aidan, to Otterspool and Sefton Park on their bikes and that's when I noticed the litter. The council do a great job, but with more people in the parks the bins are overflowing and they have that added pressure.

"So I thought I'd come up with this incentive for families and people to clean up the local area themselves and it's worked. Over the weekend we've had five or six families come in with bags of rubbish."

The 47-year-old added that he hoped that people would be less likely to drop litter if they saw others picking it up.

He said: "I see a lot of litter outside my shop from McDonald's and KFC, when the nearest McDonald's is about a mile away. So people are opening their car doors and just dropping the litter on the kerb.

"I'm hoping this incentive will get people to collect the rubbish in the park and spark a chain reaction, so others will pick up their rubbish. If bins are full, just take your rubbish home or bring it here and I will give you something back for doing your bit.

"Lot of other groups in the park have been really supportive and I'm hoping together we can sort it out. It's more about educating the younger generation although younger families with little kids are learning about it in school and about the environment and how important it is to pick stuff up.

"As a business, I'm more than willing to help even if it is at our cost for the rubbish to be disposed of and through our food and drink incentive, but it's worth it to raise awareness."
