Liverpool shirt number Kostas Tsimikas could get when transfer completes

Liverpool look to be nearing completion on their first senior signing of the summer transfer window after agreeing an £11.75m deal with Olympiacos for left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

The ECHO understands that Tsimikas is due to discuss terms and the 24-year-old could conduct a medical soon with the club if an agreement is met ahead of the Reds’ return for pre-season training next weekend.

Liverpool supporters are already trying to anticipate what they can expect from the Greek and one question is what number will he wear?

There have been some notable departures from Jurgen Klopp's squad and recent number swaps, leaving the new defender with a few options.

But, which shirt numbers are available for the imminent arrival?

Number 21

This is Tsimikas' current number at Olympiacos and he could decide to pick it right back up again with the Reds.

He also preferred the number during his loan spell at Willem II Tilburg.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having switched to number 15 last summer, this jersey has been vacant since. It is usually held by a midfielder with Gary McAllister and Lucas Leiva also being two former number 21s for Liverpool.

Number 6

The second most common number Tsimikas has held in his career has been the 3 shirt.

He had it for Olympiacos U19s and while on loan at Esbjerg fB.

The number 3 is currently occupied by Fabinho at Liverpool, although it is more common for a leftback to have that number.

With Dejan Lovren's departure, the Brazilian midfielder could be tempted or persuaded to switch to a more familiar number 6 or Tsimikas could opt for taking it for himself.

Number 20

Before Tsimikas was a number 21 at Olympiacos, he had the number 20.

This number is also available to Klopp's new man after Adam Lallana left the club on the expiration of his contract and signed for Brighton.

Aly Cissokho and Javier Mascherano have been previous holders of a number first given to Stig Inge Bjornebye.

Number 2

Nathaniel Clyne's departure at the end of June has opened up the first outfield number in the squad. It has previously been held by the likes of Alvaro Arbeloa, Glen Johnson, Rob Jones and Stephane Henchoz. Oh, and Andrea Dossena.

Usually picked up by a right sided defender than a left, it is still free for Tsimikas if he chooses.

Speculation over Trent Alexander-Arnold opting to switch don't seem set to come to fruition as the youngster seems to prefer the story behind his number 66.

Number 22

This number is also available although historically picked up by goalkeepers.

Andy Lonergan, another to leave this summer, may not have played a senior game but he was on the bench eight times this season. Others to have held this jersey are Chris Kirkland, Simon Mignolet.

Number 25

Not since Pepe Reina has this been in use. Indeed, only four Liverpool players have worn the jersey - David Thompson, Igor Biscan and Neil Ruddock the others.

Number 19

The shirt has been out of service since Sadio Mane switched to number 10 in 2018. It's free but will admittedly be an odd choice for a left back.

Other available include numbers 28, 29, 30, 31

Joel Matip is number 32, and after that the majority of Liverpool squad numbers are in the 40s and beyond. Curtis Jones will be number 17 next season.

Tsimikas' previous numbers for Olympiacos have been numbers 46 and 41 but with several lower numbers available, it's unlikely he will return to one of those when he becomes a Liverpool player.
