Liverpool set to smash Premier League record that can likely never be beaten

Liverpool are set to shatter a record recently held by both Chelsea and Manchester United for the most days spent at the top of the Premier League table.

During the 2014/15 season, the London Blues spent 274 days in the lead as they claimed a sixth top flight title.

The record for the longest time spent in first place was previously held by Man United who spent 262 days of the 1993/94 campaign in first place.

But due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent suspension of football, this means Liverpool are on track to smash both records - which were kindly provided by Opta.

The Reds have, at the time of publication, spent a staggering 220 days in pole position, and with nine matches still to play and 25 points clear of nearest placed rivals Manchester City, this tally is set to increase with every passing day.

Football is currently suspended until April 30 at the earliest, which will likely see the season run beyond June.

Liverpool, who have been top of the tree since the second matchday following a 2-1 win at Southampton, will have by May 17 accrued as many days at the top as the 2015 winners' Chelsea.

This means that on the day the regular season was scheduled to finish, Jurgen Klopp's side will have equalled Chelsea's tally of 274 days.

With the season looking likely it will run on into June, Liverpool could well see themselves eclipsing the 300-day mark.
