Liverpool set to play in front of fans for first time since coronavirus pandemic

Liverpool are set to play their first match in front of fans since the coronavirus pandemic hit football.

Following the resumption of action after the suspension of the season in March, every match has been played behind closed doors with only a small number of officials, stewards, club staff and media present.

The Premier League and the Government remain locked in talks regarding the safe return to stadiums with the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) planning to have around 30 percent of each arena filled to begin with and eventually ease in more spectators.

But Premier League clubs reportedly do not think this will work as they seek to grant access to as many season-ticket holders as possible.

Liverpool have yet to even announce plans for season ticket holders to renew their seats yet but it now appears some lucky fans will be present at the Reds' second pre-season friendly match next week.

Jurgen Klopp and his men are currently in an Austrian training camp and will take on  Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart - Klopp's boyhood team - this Saturday, August 22 at 5pm behind closed doors.

Liverpool will then return to Salzburg's Red Bull Arena on Tuesday, August 25 (kick off 3pm) where they beat Takumi Minamino's old team 2-0 in a crunch Champions League decider last December.

The Austrian club have announced 1,250 fans will be allowed to attend the game and will hold a ballot among their season ticket holders.

They said on their website: "On 25 August in front of 1250 spectators at the Red Bull Arena!

"We will stick to our ‘loyalty pays’ motto and give our season-ticket holders the opportunity to win tickets for the match.

"All holders of a season ticket will receive a newsletter by email with a link they can click on to register for the ticket draw. Registrations must be made by Tuesday 18 August by midnight Austrian time. Every winner will receive two tickets in order to invite another season-ticket holder with them.

"It is an honour for us that thanks to the contacts we made last year with the Liverpool hierarchy, they approached us to try to help them find an alternative base for their training camp.

"We are even more pleased, of course, especially for our fans, to be able to host a big friendly match as part of this.

"We are looking forward to a fantastic festival of football!"

The Salzburg match will be 167 days since Liverpool last played in front of fans, which was the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on 13 March.
