Liverpool set to land first summer signing as Sepp van den Berg travels for medical

Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg is set to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer and will undergo a medical on Merseyside this week.

The 17-year-old, who made 15 Eredivisie appearances for PEC Zwolle last season, has been tracked by a number of top sides across Europe with Bayern Munich, Ajax and PSV all having been beaten to a deal by the Champions League winners.

Van den Berg, a Dutch under-19 international, has been in London to finalise the deal and will travel north to Liverpool on Wednesday in order to undergo his medical.

The club are keen to wrap up the deal, thought to be €1.9million before add-ons, by the weekend.

The Anfield hierarchy believe Van den Berg has similar potential to that shown by Joe Gomez when they signed him from Charlton.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace remain interested in a deal for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The Liverpool second-choice keeper will be allowed to leave this summer should an acceptable deal be reached.
