Meanwhile, in Lisbon, rain is forecast for the next few days and temperatures will reach 25-26 degrees.

Thursday is forecast to be slightly cooler in Liverpool as temperatures drop to 20 degrees and there's a 60 per cent chance of rain.

The Met Office forecast for the North West said: "Plenty of sunshine on Wednesday and feeling very warm to locally hot.

"Skies clouding over later as cloud moves in from the west. Maximum temperature 28 °C."

Some areas of the North West could be hit by thunder on Thursday as temperatures start to cool.

The Met Office said: "Scattered showers on Thursday and Friday, heavier and possibly thundery on Thursday. Drier on Saturday but a few showers are still possible. Turning cooler."
