Liverpool set for Mohamed Salah talks after official written request is made in Egypt

Liverpool are set for talks with Mohamed Salah over the forward's involvement in this summer's delayed Olympic Games.

The football tournament at the Tokyo Games will take place between July 22 and August 7, eating in to a significant portion of Liverpool's pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

After such a disrupted beginning to the current season, Jurgen Klopp is sure to want the vast majority of his squad to be together before the start of the next Premier League campaign on August 14.

Salah represented his country at the 2012 Games in the UK, playing in matches held in Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow, but with Covid travel restrictions uncertain ahead of the Japan Games then it is unclear how long he could be away for.

Egypt have long been determined to include Salah as one of the three permitted overage players in their squad, which is otherwise made up of under-23 players, and the Head of the Temporary Committee in charge of the Egyptian FA, Ahmed Megahed, says they have written to the Reds about the forward.

"Liverpool management replied to our message saying that they [will] discuss the situation with the player," Megahed told Egyptian television.

"I am sure that Salah is eager to wear the Pharaohs' jersey while participating in the Olympics if he could.

"But it's not his own decision to make as he needs to discuss it with the club's management. I hope Liverpool accepts our request."

Speaking last January, when it was still thought that Olympics would be held in 2020, Klopp didn't seem too keen on the prospect of Salah playing.

“The Olympics is a wonderful thing but it would not be too cool,” he said.

"No decision has been made yet.

"What I have to say I will say it to Mo, so that is all.

"Neither side has made a decision. I wish we could have whole squad together for pre-season but that is not possible for different reasons."
