Liverpool set for Melwood pre-season but planning Kirkby move before end of year

Liverpool will begin preparations for next season at Melwood after a delay in the opening of their new base in Kirkby.

Jurgen Klopp and his squad were scheduled to move into a newly built facility situated next to the club’s academy in time for the start of the 2020-21 campaign

However, the coronavirus pandemic forced building work to grind to a halt in March, resulting in the planned opening date being pushed back.

Consequently, the Reds have now committed to beginning pre-season at their current base, the layout of which had already been reconfigured to aid compliance with social distancing guidelines.

The Merseyside club had agreed to sell the land on which Melwood is situated to affordable housing developer Torus but retained the lease for another year - a move that has allowed for their stay to be extended with little trouble.

With construction work at Kirkby having resumed in mid-May, the hope remains that the new site will be fully operational by late summer.

As such, Liverpool are still planning on moving into their new home before the end of the year.

The timing of the switch remains up in the air, though, with Klopp keen not to disrupt his players during their planned Premier League title defence.
