Liverpool set for historic first as groundbreaking UEFA Super Cup appointment made

Liverpool's UEFA Super Cup clash against Chelsea later this month will create history when Stéphanie Frappart becomes the first woman to referee at major UEFA men's event.

Frappart will head a team of predominantly female officials for the match at Besiktas Park in Istanbul on August 14.

The 35-year-old is no stranger to big events, having taken charge of the Women's World Cup final between United States and Holland in July and the UEFA Women's Euro 2017 semi-final where England faced Holland.

Frappart has already made history in her native France where she became the first female to officiate a Ligue 1 game when refereeing Amiens against Strasbourg. She will be part of the Ligue 1 referee pool this season.

"I have said on many occasions that the potential for women's football has no limits and I am delighted that Stéphanie Frappart has been appointed to officiate at this year's UEFA Super Cup," said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

"As an organisation, we place the utmost importance on the development of women's football in all areas.

"I hope the skill and devotion that Stéphanie has shown throughout her career to reach this level will provide inspiration to millions of girls and women around Europe and show them there should be no barriers in order to reach one's dream."

It will be the first time Liverpool have been officiated by a female referee, although Sian Massey has been an assistant referee at several previous domestic games.

Alongside Frappart will be assistant referees Manuela Nicolosi of France and Michelle O'Neal from the Republic of Ireland. The fourth official will be Turkey's Cuneyt Cakir - the referee for Liverpool's 4-0 win over Barcelona in May.

VAR will be used for the UEFA Super Cup. The VAR official will be Clement Turpin from France, and he will be aided by fellow countryman François Letexier, Mark Borsch of Germany and Italy's Massimiliano Irrati.
