Liverpool set for Champions League heartbreak despite 'unbeaten end to season'

Liverpool will suffer Champions League heartbreak by missing out on a top four spot this season by a single point, according to a leading sports supercomputer.

With four games remaining, the reigning Premier League champions remain six points adrift of a place in the top four but with a game in hand on Leicester City.

The calculation has been made by FiveThirtyEight, a website that uses statistical analysis to predict probabilities, and they reckon that Liverpool, currently on 57 points, will collect eight more points (two wins and two draws, it can’t be obtained any other way) to finish on 65 points.

Although this is considerably better form than the faltering Foxes, who are tipped to pick up just three more points from their remaining three games, the final total still leaves Jurgen Klopp’s men a point shy of Brendan Rodgers’ side (who also have an FA Cup final against Chelsea on May 15) despite Liverpool being expected to finish on a better goal difference of plus 22 compared to plus 19 following these matches.

The Reds – who currently lie sixth – are expected to climb a place though to finish above David Moyes’ West Ham United who sit in fifth position right now.

The Hammers, who have 58 points, are tipped to collect five more points and end two points shy of Liverpool.

Liverpool – who have competed in the Champions League for the last four seasons, winning the European Cup for the sixth time in 2019 – have the following fixtures remaining.

Reds fixtures: Thursday May 13, Manchester United (a) 8:15pm; Sunday May 16, West Bromwich Albion (a) 4:30pm; Wednesday May 19, Burnley (a) 8:15pm; Sunday May 23, Crystal Palace (h) 4pm.

Leicester City fixtures: Tuesday May 11, Manchester United (a) 6pm; Tuesday May 18, Chelsea (a) 8:15pm; Sunday May 23, Tottenham Hotspur (h) 4pm.

West Ham United fixtures: Saturday May 15, Brighton & Hove Albion (a) 8pm; Wednesday May 19, West Bromwich Albion (a) 8:15pm; Sunday May 23, Southampton (h) 4pm.
