Liverpool set for alteration to Nike kit during new Premier League season

Liverpool could begin their partnership with new sponsors Nike with a major alteration to their kit in the upcoming Premier League season.

The Reds' agreement with shirt sleeve sponsors Western Union has come to an end and the club currently have no replacement lined up.

Western Union were the first company to have their logo emblazoned on the left sleeve of Liverpool's shirts after they joined forces three years ago.

The contract was initially due to be five years in length and was worth £5million per season to Liverpool in revenue.

As reports the Liverpool Echo , the US-based finance firm have now backed out of the deal, leaving Liverpool with a race to find a new sponsor.

A statement from the firm read: "Western Union’s sponsorship of Liverpool Football Club has been very successful for both our business and our brand and we are very proud of what we and the club have achieved over the last three seasons.

“However, we evaluate all of our activity, including sponsorships, on a regular basis, and as our business and brand needs and objectives continue to evolve, we have made the decision not to continue with the Liverpool Football Club sponsorship beyond the end of this season.

“We wish Liverpool FC continued success in the future and would like to thank everyone at the club for their support over the years."

The decision could actually work in Liverpool's favour though, particularly given their new-found status as Premier League champions.

They are thought to earn less than their top Premier League rivals Arsenal (£10m), Chelsea (£10m) and United (£15-20m) in shirt sleeve sponsorship.

Now they have the opportunity to negotiate better terms, providing they are able to find a willing sponsor.

That could prove more difficult due to the ongoing financial crisis in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, but Liverpool do not have a deadline for when they need to have a sponsor in place, as they are still able to add to their kit once the season has kicked off.
