Liverpool set for £15m boost as 100 cruises scheduled for 2022

Liverpool is set for a £15m boost this year as more than 100 cruises are expected to come to the city's shores during 2022.

A total of 100 cruises returned to Liverpool in the second half of of 2021, brining 80,000 passengers to the city.

That followed worldwide cruises being cancelled following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.

Councillors have now spoken of their "optimism" for the cruise sector after a difficult couple of years, reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Liverpool City Council's cabinet member for culture and visitor economy, Cllr Harry Doyle, said that while there will be some "justifiable caution" the authority is optimistic about the coming season.

He said: "With all the talk of the problems the industry has faced, it's important to remember the impact that the lack of cruising has had on our loyal passengers, who work hard all year round to earn their place on board.

"Plans for 2022 are shaping up nicely, and we will continue to take all the necessary precautions to make cruising through Liverpool a safe experience for everyone involved."

In March, Virgin Voyages is expected to dock at Cruise Liverpool's satellite terminal, with Queen Victoria sailing in during June and Disney Magic in September.

Inaugural visits are planned, too for 10 ships, including the Norwegian Dawn, Valiant Lady and Celebrity Apex.

Return visits from the Fred Olsen and its flagship Borealis, which is set to make Liverpool its homeport for the second time, are planned.

The council said retaining the 'satellite' terminal while uncertainty around Covid persist will ensure a safe and speedy way of passengers to join or leave a cruise.

Cruise Liverpool's head of cruise operations John Mawer said he was "looking forward" to the events, especially given it will mark the terminal's 15th birthday later this year.

He added : "What better way to do it than ensuring record ships and passengers visiting our shores and enjoying the famous Liverpool welcome.

"We also want 2022 to be the year when me make progress in reducing the environmental impact of the ships on the city, there's a long way to go but talks are already underway and I'm excited to be part of the conversation on behalf of Liverpool."
