Liverpool 'serious' about Timo Werner transfer and even 'made contact' in January

Liverpool are reportedly serious about signing Timo Werner and even made contact with the Germany international in the January transfer window.

RB Leipzig forward Werner has been linked with a move to Anfield for well over a year now, amid claims Liverpool have come close to triggering his £50million release clause.

Bild, via Sport Witness, is reporting that Liverpool made contact with Leipzig in January over a move for their prized asset, with the plan to loan him back for the remainder of the season.

The German publication has now followed this up with the claim that Liverpool are 'serious' about getting the deal done, and are in pole position to do exactly that.

Liverpool have been linked with a handful of attacking midfielders in recent weeks, including Kai Havertz, and a sensational move to re-sign Philippe Coutinho.

Signing any of the three would require huge investment on Liverpool's part, and this is something Reds CEO Peter Moore suggested the club are attempting to steer clear of this summer.

Moore recently revealed he is hoping Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff can further develop the burgeoning talents already at the club.

"That show [against Shrewsbury] is the power of what the academy system is able to do," Moore told  Soccer Laduma.

"In a world of football where players are going for £50m, £100m, £150m and, in some instances, £200m, to be able to bring players through like Trent Alexander-Arnold, or a Curtis Jones and behind that a Harvey Elliott, is great.

"This is not only developing talent, it's going to save us a load of money. It means you don't [always] have to go out into the marketplace."
