Jay Rodriguez claims Burnley refuse to be intimidated by Liverpool following their battling draw against Manchester United.
Rodriguez earned a point for Burnley with his 100th career league goal to help their relegation fight and the striker says the result has boosted the Clarets ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool.
Burnley have lost their last four games at Turf Moor against the Reds and Jurgen Klopp’s side are hot favourites to extend their winning run.
The Clarets remain bottom of the Premier League with just one win all season and have recorded the solitary league victory at Turf Moor since January 2021.
But Rodriguez insists Sean Dyche’s men believe they can get a result because of their stirring fightback against United at Turf Moor.
Rodriguez claims Burnley were able to cause United "problems" as they upset Ralf Rangnick's side to claim a point.
“We’ve got to believe,” said the hitman. “We’re in the Premier League and it’s 11 men against 11.
“We’ve shown against Man United that we can mix it and play football as well. Hopefully we can just carry that on.”
Rodriguez, 32, was heartened by how Burnley recovered from falling behind to Paul Pogba’s opener to battle back in the second half.
He felt they might have taken the lead through new Dutch striker Wout Weghorst and believes there were many positives from the result and performance to take into the Liverpool game.
“We’ve had some great results over the years,” he said. “We were unlucky not to go ahead with Wout’s chance, but we’ve got to take the positives.
“We felt that we were still in the game after they scored, but we just needed to up it with a bit of quality and a belief to play.
“We did that and we caused them problems. To come out in the second half with that performance gives us belief and confidence moving onto our next game.
“It’s on to recovery now and getting ready for a big game on Sunday.”
Rodriguez was relieved to bring up his century of league goals after being stuck on 99 for the last 12 months.
He has netted 41 in his two spells with his boyhood club Burnley and praised Weghorst’s role in setting up his goal.
“It’s been doing my head in to be honest,” said the former West Brom and Southampton forward.
“I’ve been dying to get it, but I’ve always got belief in myself and in how I work.
“I’m honest and I keep working on what I need to improve. I’ve had tough times earlier in my career and I knew that if I kept doing the work, I’d get there.
“It was a great touch from Wout. You can see how well he holds the ball up when you play it into his feet, and he had great awareness to play it into me.
“I took it in front of Harry Maguire to make him make a decision as to whether he fouled me or not. It’s a natural thing for me to do that one-on-one and I’m pleased with it.”
