Liverpool sent Jadon Sancho warning alongside Manchester United

Steve McManaman has warned Liverpool not to get involved in a bidding war for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

Sancho has scored 30 times in 75 league appearances for Dortmund since breaking into the first-team in 2017 and is reportedly valued at £100m.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with both Liverpool and Manchester United and despite admitting he would 'suit' a move to the Premier League, McManaman advised the prodigy to remain in Germany.

"Jurgen Klopp will bring players in, particularly when those out of contract leave. It's just a matter of timing," McManaman told BT Sport.

"But with the team they've got at the moment - why would you spend nearly £100m on a 20-year-old?

"I don't mean it disparagingly. Sancho might suit Liverpool and he'd definitely suit Manchester United.

"I've watched him lots of times and he's having a wonderful season.

"Ideally I think he should stay at Dortmund where he's already playing Champions League football and flourishing.”

McManaman also believes Timo Werner has chosen a move to Chelsea to guarantee regular football.

Werner was expected to be a transfer target for Klopp this summer but is set for a switch to Stamford Bridge.

"He will want first-team action all the time and you simply can't guarantee that at Liverpool," he said on BT Sport.

"The main thing for Klopp is to keep a strong and professional core of 18 or 19 players who are full internationals but have the right mentality if they're not playing.

"I think most people get that, but it's hard to bring in a £60m player and say: 'You're probably not going to play every game, we've got people who are just as good as you.'

"Nowadays new signings want to come in feeling they're going to be first choice in the team."
