Liverpool send Virgil van Dijk to specialist over injury but remain hopeful for Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool are sending Virgil van Dijk to see a specialist on Sunday as they sweat on the long-term fitness of their £75m centre-back.

The Reds defender was forced off early on during Saturday's Merseyside derby draw with Everton after a shocking tackle from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

After initially trying to play on, the Dutchman was withdrawn for Joe Gomez but was able to walk off unaided at Goodison Park.

Van Dijk was later sent to a local hospital for a scan on his right knee before leaving on crutches on Saturday evening.

Liverpool are keen to have a clearer diagnosis for a player who has developed into arguably the world's best centre-half during his near three years at the club, however.

Anfield sources have admitted they are concerned about what might await them in the findings of a consultant, but are refusing to speculate about potential timeframes of absence for Van Dijk.

Suggestions that Van Dijk could miss the rest of the season through the injury have been viewed dimly inside the club as they await more information of the Netherlands captain's problem.

The ECHO understands that speculative claims on Saturday night that Van Dijk could miss between seven and eight months are seen as unhelpful at this stage from a Liverpool perspective.

Liverpool will hope to have a better understanding of Van Dijk's situation after the defender has been viewed by the consultant on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Premier League champions are more hopeful on the prognosis of Thiago Alcantara.

The Spain international midfielder was caught late by Richarlison in the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in an incident that saw referee Michael Oliver send off the Everton forward.

It is understood that Liverpool are optimistic the injury to the former Bayern Munich star is not serious.

The Reds are preparing to get their Champions League campaign up and running this week in Amsterdam against Ajax.
