Liverpool send scouts to Champions League clash as Luis Suarez team-mate stuns Barcelona

Liverpool scouts were in Portugal on Wednesday night to cast their eye over Benfica and Barcelona's meeting in the Champions League.

Darwin Nunez will have caught the eye with two goals against the Spanish giants as the hosts beat the Spanish giants 3-0 at the Estadio da Luz.

The towering Uruguay striker, a compatriot of Reds legend Luis Suarez, drove at the Barcelona backline to put Benfica ahead after only two minutes, pulling off an impressive step over before rifling the ball low into the net.

Rafa Silva doubled the home side’s advantage in the 69th minute before Nunez, who stands at 6ft 2in, kept his cool from the penalty spot to expertly side-foot his spot-kick past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Nunez was in impressive form though Liverpool were not the only club in attendance for Benfica’s famous victory.

According to a scout list shared by The Independent’s Melissa Reddy, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Leicester, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and even Championship Blackburn Rovers were present too.

European heavyweights Bayern Munich, Milan, Juventus and Atletico Madrid were also there to watch over the game.

As well as goalscorers Nunez and Rafa Silva, other players on show included Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.

For Ronald Koeman’s defeated Barcelona, Philippe Coutinho, who the Reds know all about, featured from the bench.

Pedri, linked to Liverpool in the summer, started the game as did 18-year-old Ansu Fati, the man who now wears the number 10 shirt vacated by the legendary Lionel Messi.
