Liverpool sell defender who impressed Steven Gerrard for undisclosed fee

Liverpool have sold their fourth player of the summer after Tom Clayton joined Swindon Town for an undisclosed fee.

Having joined the Reds at Under-9s level, the Scotland Under-21s international worked his way through Liverpool ’s academy ranks and broke into the Under-18s set-up under Steven Gerrard before progressing to their Under-23s side.

On the bench for the first team when a side managed by Neil Critchley lost 5-0 to Aston Villa in the League Cup in December 2019, the 21-year-old captained Barry Lewtas' last season as they finished the campaign by winning the Lancashire FA Senior Cup.

Capable of playing in both defence and midfield, Clayton has signed a two-year contract with League Two Swindon after they agreed a deal with Liverpool earlier this month for his signature, with the deal announced midway through the Reds' pre-season friendly with Manchester United.

“I’m so pleased to join Swindon," Clayton said. "Having spoken to a number of people about the club before signing, I knew this was the place I wanted to play my football and take the next step in my career, so it wasn’t a hard decision at all.

“I’m itching to get started and push myself hard here. I want to become a first team regular and show the fans what I’m about. This is a great club with superb ambition, and I really want to be part of this exciting project moving forward.”

Clayton follows in the footsteps of Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Neco Williams in departing Anfield permanently this summer.
