Liverpool secure Champions League boost ahead of next season

Liverpool are in the hunt to secure a memorable double this season as Jurgen Klopp's men fight for both domestic and European glory.

The Reds are currently second in the Premier League table, one point behind leaders Manchester City with just three games of the season remaining.

They’re also in the Champions League semi-finals, and face Spanish giants Barcelona in the first leg of their double-header next Wednesday.

And while they are yet to taste success this season, their performances have given them a huge boost ahead of the next campaign.

That is because their exploits have guaranteed them to be in at least pot two of next season’s draw for the competition.

This would essentially help them avoid a repeat of the ‘group of death’ scenario they found themselves in this campaign.

Klopp’s men were drawn with Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Crvena Zvezda, ultimately fighting their way through to the knockout stages.

They could even secure a place in pot one if they win either the Premier League or the Champions League this season.

Pot one is made up of the winners of the top six European leagues - Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France and Russia - plus the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

UEFA club coefficient rankings, based on the performance of the clubs in European competition over the five previous seasons, then works out pots two, three and four.

Last year Liverpool only had enough coefficient points for pot three, but their performances over the last 12 months have made a vital difference to their ranking.
