Liverpool scouting could see Mohamed Salah repeat as two transfer targets primed for moves

Liverpool are no strangers to going back for players they have targeted before.

Ozan Kabak, while his move has not been made permanent this summer, was linked with a switch to Anfield for 18 months or so before he moved on loan in January, and there are countless others too.

Manuel Locatelli, 23, and Denis Zakaria, who turns 25 in November, have both been on reported Liverpool transfer shortlists in the past, and both could be on the move this summer.

"I’ll decide my future after the Euros," Locatelli said last week. "I talked with Sassuolo board - we know what we’ve to do in July."

The defensive midfielder is being linked most heavily with Man City and Juventus, and has a valuation of around £30m.

"We've spoken about Locatelli and Sassuolo before," said David Hughes on the Analysing Anfield podcast.

"He was at AC Milan until the summer before last, he is just 23, and he has been doing some really good stuff in Serie A.

"He's very much a traditional box-to-box midfielder and he does good work with and without the ball. He shows up well in terms of defensive duals and interceptions and is also quite progressive with the ball at his feet, dictating play.

"Italy are more possession-based under Roberto Mancini and it will be interesting to see how he performs, with clubs like Juventus and possibly some Premier League sides in for him.

"I'd like to see him in another division before Liverpool, perhaps, but he is one to keep an eye on."

"There was a lot of hype around him a few years ago," added Josh Williams.

"But while that has died down, I don't think there has been any kind of decline.

"When he emerged at AC Milan, he was really talked up, and he's definitely a player worth flagging."

Zakaria, too, is one who has been linked with Liverpool before, and who will be on plenty of radar's should he impress at the Euros with Switzerland.

"There was interest from England, which I can confirm, but the people at Borussia Monchengladbach really fought very hard for me," Zakaria told Weltfussball in 2017, just after his move to Germany.

"I had the impression that they wanted me absolutely. That impressed me and my feeling told me that Gladbach is the best choice for me. In time I can go on to an even larger club; the past has often proven that."

He also told Sport Bild : "[Gladbach] wanted me 100 per cent, so I wanted to go here and not to Liverpool. If you go to England and you are not immediately good, you are immediately outside. It was too early for me."

"Zakaria has been linked with Liverpool in the past and I think that Liverpool tried to sign him when he was at

Young Boys

in Switzerland," Williams explained.

"A year later, he moved to Monchengladbach for about £10m.

"He is the type of midfielder who would cope with English football - six foot three, good on the ball, reliable, and good as a presence to win back the ball.

"He's still only 24 and has been linked with Manchester United, so we might see him in England sometime soon."

Liverpool, it is known, do not stop tracking players they are keen on even should they move elsewhere in the meantime.

Mohamed Salah is the most obvious example of that, with the Reds keen on him when he moved to Chelsea, only to have to wait another three-and-a-half seasons to bring him to Anfield.

Whether Liverpool maintain an interest in either Locatelli or Zakaria remains to be seen, but the attraction of seeking out a midfielder of some sort this summer, given Gini Wijnaldum's departure, is clear - and both players could see their reputations swelled at this summer's Euros.
