Liverpool school set to be expanded under £900k plans

Liverpool Council is set to back plans to expand a city senior school’s intake by up to 150 pupils.

The cabinet will decide next week to approve a £900,000 grant to Notre Dame Catholic College in Everton for a series of works across the school site.

They are aimed at allowing the school to gradually increase its intake over a number of years as part of an attempt to ensure there are enough places city-wide.

Figures from the council predict that, by 2025, pupil numbers in the city’s secondary schools will be 23% higher than 2015 levels.

At Notre Dame, the move to address this issue would see its capacity expand by 30 pupils in each of the five year groups.

The report said: “ The Council has worked with those schools that expressed a firm interest to expand. In agreement with the local authority Notre Dame Catholic College has increased its Published Admission Number (PAN) from 150 to 180 and will expand to full capacity through years 7 to 11 by 2023.”

The overhaul of the site to accommodate the larger number of pupils will include the removal of a number of offices on both the ground and first floor to allow for more teaching space.

Existing classrooms would also be remodelled to allow for more room and the servery on the first floor would be redeveloped to be able to prepare and serve food to larger numbers of children.

Liverpool Council’s cabinet is set to approve the proposals next Friday.

What is your experience of trying to get your kids into schools in Liverpool? Do you think the increase in capacity should be done through building new schools or expanding existing ones?
