A number of school across the city have taken similar steps this week.

Calderstones School asked Year 9 pupils to self-isolate until June 28 following a number of positive cases within the bubble.

The ECHO understands headteacher Lee Ratcliffe wrote to parents and carers over the weekend to inform them that the school had now taken the decision for the Year 9 bubble to stay home and isolate.

On Monday Gateacre School told pupils Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 not to attend while pastoral staff at the school carry out track and trace work.

This followed a number of Covid-19 cases over the weekend.

Headteacher Gareth Jones said that pupils who had been asked to isolate at home would receive remote lessons.

The Liverpool City Region, alongside the rest of Cheshire and Merseyside, was named among areas set to receive enhanced support to help tackle rising cases of the more infectious Delta variant of Covid-19.

The Delta variant is now the dominant strain across the UK, with cases continuing to rise in Cheshire and Merseyside. People in these areas can also help protect their community by remaining cautious, by working from home if possible and remembering to practice hands, face, space and fresh air.

A senior Liverpool doctor has said the city is starting to see a fourth wave of Covid-19 patients as he was forced to once again don Personal Protective Equipment to treat seriously ill people.

Peter Hampshire has said that hospitals are now seeing a fourth wave of people in the city with Covid-19 and explained that even just a handful of very sick virus patients can have a big impact on the NHS.
