Two schoolgirls are in critical condition and three others have been seriously injured after a group of eight girls was hit by a car on Belvidere Road in south Liverpool.
Two of the victims are in a critical condition, three in a serious state and two others have minor injuries, the Liverpool Echo reports.
The eighth casualty was discharged after being treated at the scene.
Merseyside Police said the five main casualties are girls aged between 11 and 13.
Police confirmed the collision was reported at 3.20pm by a passer-by, who witnessed the collision involving a yellow Peugeot and a number of pedestrians.
The driver of the Peugeot, an 80-year-old woman, is being treated at the scene.
Nearby roads will remain closed until an investigation can be carried out. Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.
