Liverpool's worst city centre parking issues according to drivers

Drivers across Liverpool are adamant the city has a parking problem.

Over the last few days the ECHO has highlighted how selfish and dangerous parking is making life hard for pedestrians, wheelchair users and parents with prams.

Pavement parking and other forms of obstructive parking have become commonplace around the city centre - with a shocking image this week showing at least eight cars parked on a pedestrian area near Liverpool One Bus Station.

So where are the worst offending areas and what should be done to solve these issues?

We asked ECHO readers for their thoughts and experiences in a special parking survey.

Pavement parking

We asked our readers if they had seen pavement parking taking place in Liverpool city centre.

The answers were pretty unequivocal, with 80% (470) of our 589 respondents saying that they had.

We also asked where the worst places in town are for pavement parking.

Liverpool ONE was highlighted as the worst offending area in our survey, with The Strand and the Waterfront in general closely behind.

What should be done?

A range of views on this one, but the largest response came from people saying the cost of parking in and around the city centre should be reduced.

The second highest score went to those calling for more clamping of cars that park illegally.

Bigger fines and more car parks also scored fairly highly - while 11% of respondents opted for the more extreme option of crushing the cars that repeatedly park illegally.

Pricey parking

Many of those answering our survey said that parking is too expensive in the city centre, with 81% saying it costs too much currently.

Asked the most people had paid to park, a number of people said they had paid as much as £16 to park in the city centre.

Comments

We asked those surveyed for any final comments, with a number of people simply stating 'too expensive.'

One person offered a withering response to the current situation in Liverpool, stating: "Ignoring traffic rules has become endemic with very little push back from the authorities.

"The erosion of safe pedestrian spaces has been widely accepted for convenience over safety."
