Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk told he's a better defender than "dog" Nemanja Vidic

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk has been told he is a better defender than "dog" Nemanja Vidic - by France World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf.

Van Dijk has been crucial to Liverpool's success in recent seasons, having played a key role in last year's Champions League triumph after helping the Reds reach two successive finals in the compeition.

The Dutchman's calm and consistent performances at centre-back also won him the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award and have helped take Jurgen Klopp's side to within two wins of this season's Premier League title.

And in between, Liverpool have collected the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Van Dijk has some way to go before he can match Vidic's silverware collection, however.

Former United defender Vidic is widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs of the Premier League era, and won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and one Champions League during his nine years at Old Trafford.

But former Chelsea defender Leboeuf reckons Van Dijk has the edge over Vidic - because of his range of passing and his leadership qualities.

Asked which centre-back he rated most highly, Leboeuf told ESPN FC : "I would go for Van Dijk. I think he's more complete.

"I loved Vidic, because I think he was a dog, and a fantastic defender. But Van Dijk can lead the team, and has range.

"I don't think Vidic was capable of doing that. Hats off to Vidic, though."

Meanwhile, Van Dijk urged Liverpool fans to stick together in a poignant message on social media amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Reds' defender and his teammates have been forced out of their Melwood training base as they wait to hear how the Premier League run-in will be concluded.

"I just wanted to send a message to say I hope everyone is doing OK in these difficult times," Van Dijk wrote.

"We must all look after each other in what is tough circumstances for everyone across the whole world.

"Please stay safe. We will be back! You’ll Never Walk Alone."
