Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk tipped to give Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unlikely transfer boost

Virgil van Dijk could be about to hand Manchester United a big transfer boost according to former Red Devils star Dimitar Berbatov.

The Liverpool centre-back has shone since completing his £75million move to Anfield in January 2018, helping Jurgen Klopp's side to last season's Champions League Final and transforming their defence to help lead their Premier League title charge this year.

Believed by many to be the best defender in the world, the 27-year-old has forged a blossoming partnership with teenage sensation Matthijs de Ligt at international level.

The 19-year-old is already Ajax captain and looks set to leave the Amsterdam giants in a big-money move this summer.

Berbatov wants to see newly-appointed Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bring De Ligt to Old Trafford, and thinks Van Dijk could be an unlikely ally in helping make a deal happen.

"One player I would love to see at Old Trafford is Ajax defender, Matthijs de Ligt," he told Betfair. "Although I know every big club in Europe is after him.

"I watched him play against Real Madrid and he looks the real deal - so confident and assured for a player of his age.

"Having his international team-mate Virgil van Dijk already in the Premier League could be a boost for any English team chasing De Ligt.

"The Liverpool man will be telling him how good the league is and that can make a real difference to where you choose to go."
