Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk snubbed by Man City's Raheem Sterling in PFA Player of the Year vote

With Liverpool and Manchester City going head-to-head in the Premier League title, unsurprisingly their players are also up against each for this year's individual awards too.

Alisson and Ederson are currently vying for the Golden Glove award, while Mohamed Salah is just a goal behind Sergio Aguero in the race for the Golden Boot.

But it's the battle for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award that is causing the most intrigue with Virgil van Dijk and Raheem Sterling the two favourites to win English football's most prized individual accoldade.

Van Dijk is currently best priced at 2/5 while Sterling's shortest odds are 10/3 to lift the award with the pair both enjoying astonishing seasons for their respective clubs.

The Dutchman has started all of Liverpool's Premier League games this season, transforming their defence and helping them keep 17 clean sheets as they go in search of their first league title since 1990.

Meanwhile, Sterling has registered an impressive 15 goals and nine assists from 28 league appearances.

Van Dijk didn't let his own hopes of the trophy affect his decision after admitting earlier this week that he had voted for the former Liverpool winger.

Virgil van Dijk says it's possible to win the double but any slip up could end title dreams

"I voted for Raheem Sterling," confirmed the Dutchman. "I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it. He's had a fantastic season.

"I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City. But I am just being honest I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it."

However, the Netherlands skipper wasn't afforded the same courtesy by Sterling after his Man City counterpart revealed he hadn't voted for Van Dijk - he thinks.

"I actually can’t remember," he told BT Sport . "I think voted for Harry Kane."

"No way, don’t say that," he joked after being told Van Dijk had voted for him. "Oh wow. Scandalous."
