Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk not taking 'anything for granted' as he opens up on long-term injury

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk insists he “won’t take anything for granted” when he finally returns to action from his long-term injury and will just “try to be the best player I can be.”

Van Dijk has not played since he damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee following a challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park on October 17.

He subsequently underwent successful surgery but is not yet fit to return to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 29-year-old was warned about the “considerable risk” of coming back too soon by a leading Dutch surgeon last month after reports suggested he had not ruled out captaining the Netherlands at this summer’s European Championships.

Insisting that he won’t rush his rehabilitation though, This Is Anfield quote the Liverpool centre-back as telling JBL: “In this period of being injured, it makes you think about loads of stuff, and appreciate even more what you’ve got.

“Obviously, it’s not easy, but the most important thing for me is to stay true to myself and work as hard as I can.

“So, if the time comes back and I’ll be back playing again, then I just have to enjoy every bit of it and try to be the best player I can be.

“I won’t take anything for granted. I just work, enjoy, have a smile on my face and try to stay fit.”
