Virgil van Dijk feels Liverpool have a “world-class” talent on their hands in midfield for next season – if Naby Keita can stay fit.
The Guinean has been in and out of the side under Jurgen Klopp over the past two seasons, but injuries have consistently hampered his attempts to nail down a starting spot.
Liverpool’s No. 8 made 18 appearances as his side won the Premier League this season, but half of them came after Project Restart, in June and July.
His form across that period was excellent, though, and Van Dijk was delighted that his team-mate was able to play a full part.
“I’m just very happy for Naby,” the defender told the club website.
“Naby is a fantastic guy, he works so hard and he is an outstanding football player. We see it week in and week out.
“He has unfortunately been unlucky with some injuries, but hopefully he can stay fully fit for the next season.”
If that’s the case and Keita shows improved availability in 2020/21, Van Dijk feels the Reds have a major asset who will bring improvement to the team.
“I think he is world-class, if I’m absolutely honest. I see all the moments when he has the ball, the smart moves, the smart intelligence. It’s just incredible to see and I’m very happy for him.”
Keita scored his second league goal of the season in the 5-3 win over Chelsea on the night the Reds received the league trophy at Anfield, and netted four in 27 games across all competitions.
